Not only for graphic designers: two current exhibitions

September 1, 2017

Not only for graphic designers: two current exhibitions in Munich, both worth a visit until 10 september (and some thoughts about the second one):

Kunstfoyer: Peter Keetman, free entry

Villa Stuck: Willy Fleckhaus. entry quite expensive.

According to the curators, Fleckhaus imported the role of the art director from the american to the german print media market. The exhibition shows numerous spreads from his work for student and union publications, the youth magazine twen and, later, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazin. All of these publications were highly influential for the development of editorial design in Germany, by giving importance to visual storytelling and breaking taboos of the traditional bourgeois imagery of the media in the 60s – strongly connected with the social and political changes in that period. When I was a child, Fleckhaus‘ Work had already influenced the imagery I grew up with. For younger people the exhibition might be interesting – thanks to the high quality of the work – but not surprising. What Fleckhaus did has become state-of-the-art – even before the digital publishing revolution started, just a few years after his early death in 1983. I do not agree that dtp revolution made visual communications weaker than they were in Fleckhaus‘ time (as some statements in exhibition claim). I would rather say that people like Fleckhaus brought a degree of freedom into the visual culture that made the digital publishing tools a logical & necessary step to follow.

Smaragd project proposal (rejected)

The idea is to indicate the river visually in the metro tunnels. The working title Smaragd (Emerald) refers to the colour of the Isar river which should be visible in the tunnels.

Smaragd has been my recent contribution to a project competition for art in public space by the City of Munich. I wanted to win official support for the idea and a budget to continue the work professionally. From this point, the project is a question of power and public relations. The idea needs professional work and good friends to grow.

The City of Munich rejected the project in January 2017. I am open for new strategies, partnerships and maybe another city.
